Emergency Bunker Surcharges

There are an increasing number of major carriers now imposing Emergency Bunker Surcharges (EBS) on a per TEU level in order to mitigate the rising cost of fuel prices. Additionally, some carriers have announced rate increases such as Peak Season Surcharges or increases in BAF in lieu of an EBS.

Carriers base their fuel calculations on an average of prior months’ oil barrel pricing. Therefore, rising oil costs will require on-going monitoring to inform the effectiveness of the current EBS, or whether additional adjustments will be necessary.

AGL will continue to monitor this situation closely and advise you of any further changes or potential impacts to your business.
